Cut a shape in a piece of cardstock and then add tissue paper for a picture or greeting card that glows in the sun.

Make the collage with tissue paper using one of the following techniques for two different results. Keep the collage as a picture to display or convert it into a birthday or holiday card. This project requires only a few supplies for great-looking results.

Materials to Make a Collage that Looks Like Stained Glass

The materials required for either version of this project is the same.

  • Cardstock
  • Stencils with large shapes
  • Pencil
  • Sharp scissors
  • Colored tissue paper
  • White glue

Make a Sun Catcher Collage

  1. Start with a stencil or two with large, open shapes as opposed to small details to cut from the paper. Trace the shape(s) onto the cardstock, leaving at least an inch margin all around. Repeat one image a few times over the page or use a couple of stencils with images that would make sense next to one another.
  2. Carefully, poke a hole in the center of the image and cut away the shape(s). Younger children may need a parent’s assistance with this part.
  3. Tear the tissue paper into pieces approximately one-inch. Glue onto the back of the picture. In this version of the project, cover not only the opening with tissue paper but also one side of the piece of paper so the cardstock is no longer visible.

The result when dry is a two-sided piece of artwork. One side shows only the opening(s) with the collage showing, while the other side is a complete tissue paper collage. (In the right lighting, the cut-away shapes will be visible.)

This version looks good when hung up in a window, because whether the viewer is inside or outside they get to see different images.

Make a Stained Glass-Look Card

  1. Fold a piece of cardstock in half. Decide whether to hold the card vertically or horizontally.
  2. Draw the stencil shape onto the front of the card. Poke a hole in the center of the image and cut away the shape. Leave at least half an inch between cut-away stencil shapes and the edges of the card.
  3. On the inside of the card, glue down one-inch pieces of colored tissue paper, overlapping the pieces of paper. Glue the edges of the tissue paper to the cardstock.
  4. Select another piece of cardstock using either the same color as the card or a complementary color. Cut a piece of cardstock in half. Glue the half-sheet of cardstock behind the collaged opening. This way, when someone opens the card, he won’t see the backside of the collage.

The artwork for the card is completed. This collage won’t glow when held up to the light, but the result is still pretty. For a birthday card, consider drawing a picture of a birthday cake and candles and then creating a tissue paper collage of the flames.

Try using the collage technique of cutting a shape from a piece of paper and filling in the image with a tissue paper collage. Children can create a two-sided picture to hang in a window or decorate greeting cards for someone special.
