Give a new look to postcards from vacation spots by turning them into note and greeting cards.

Cut postcards into interesting shapes and glue them onto cardstock to give them new life. Use these cards to show off a summer vacation spot in holiday cards or make these cards for more space in notes to home while still on vacation.

Photograph or Postcard Greeting Card

On the back of a postcard or photograph, measure it into six equal sections. Use a paper trimmer to cut the strips. Fold a piece of cardstock in half or use prepared blank greeting cards. With all-purpose white glue or a glue stick, stick the strips to the front of the card, leaving a small space between each strip.

As an alternative, cut apart two postcards or photographs in a similar way and then alternate strips from the two cards on the front of the greeting card. Combine the odd strips of one picture with the even strips of the other picture. This creates two cards. Select images with complementary colors or interesting images – such as a city and a country scene or the outside and inside of a historic house.

Cut Paper Shape Greeting Card

Use a stencil to trace shapes onto a postcard and cut out the shapes. Use a single-shape stencil as opposed to a stencil that breaks the image into small, disconnected pieces. Set the outline of the stencil around interesting parts of the postcard or photograph.

Glue the shapes onto cardstock or a blank greeting card. Use both the full stencil shape as well as part of the shape and set those partial shapes in the corners of the card. Decorate blank spaces with gel pen squiggles or dots of glitter glue.

Geometric Collage Greeting Card

Cut part of the greeting card into a two-to-four inch square. Cut pieces of colored photocopy paper or cardstock into squares or rectangles. Look at the colors in the picture and try to select paper in some of those colors to bring all the elements of the card design together. Play with around with the arrangement of pieces and then glue them onto the card.

Mosaic Tile Greeting Card

On the back of two postcards, measure the card into equal size squares, drawing lines to create a grid. Use a paper trimmer (or scissors if a paper trimmer isn’t available) to cut two postcards into square tiles. Reassemble the two postcards, like puzzle pieces, so it is easy to see the images.

Alternate the tiles from the two postcards, creating a checkerboard-like image. This creates enough tiles for two greeting cards. Glue the tiles onto the card either as neatly as possible or so they are slightly skewed and overlapping a bit. Use two different images of the same location.

These different ideas give a new look to postcards from vacation or postcards sent by other people. With the addition of cardstock, glue, and a paper trimmer, a variety of different designs can be created to show off vacation memories to friends and family.
