How Kids Can Make a Keepsake Craft from Paper Plates

© Christy Jones

This handy photo frame holds one to nine photos. It's a great gift for kids to make for Mother's Day, Father's Day, grandparents, family members, or special friends.

Hand prints always work well in keepsake crafts, especially for this colorful photo frame. Kids can make the photo frame using only basic craft supplies such as colored paper and paper plates. You can use ordinary paper plates, or buy inexpensive colored paper plates in the party section of dollar stores. The plates can be any size, but 9 inch plates work especially well for holding a standard 4 x 6 photo.

Young kids will need help tracing their hands (and possibly cutting the paper), while older kids can trace their own hands, or partner with a friend.

Things You’ll Need:

Make Paper Hands

  1. Place the child’s hand on a piece of paper. The hand should be palm down, with the fingers slightly spread.
  2. Trace around the child’s hand, then cut along the lines. Round off the lower edge of the paper hand.
  3. Trace and cut about seven more paper hands. (You should be able to get at least two hands from each sheet of paper.) You may need to make a few more hands if the child is very small.
  4. Optional: Have the kids decorate the hands with markers by drawing pictures or writing messages such as “Happy Mother’s Day!” or “Have a Fun Father’s Day!”, or glue a small photo to the palm of each hand.

Make the Frame

  1. Carefully poke a hole in the center of one paper plate using a scissors or sharp pencil.
  2. Cut away the middle of the paper plate, leaving only the outer rim.
  3. Glue paper hands all around the paper plate rim, with the palms of the hands toward the inside and the fingers toward the edge, overlapping them slightly so the plate is completely covered. (If you’re using more than one paper color, it looks great to alternate colors.)

Prepare the Backing

  1. Cut a piece of ribbon or yarn about 18 inches long.
  2. Glue (or tape) both ends of the ribbon to the top of the back of the paper plate. This will allow you to hang up the frame using the ribbon.
  3. Put a line of glue along the bottom and sides of the outer edge of the front of the paper plate. Leave the top unglued so you can insert a photo.
  4. Place the hand covered frame on top of the paper plate backing. Press it in place and allow the glue to dry.
  5. Slip a photo through the opening between the top of the paper plates. Make sure the corners of the photo get tucked under the edges of the paper plate rim. (If the photo is too small to be held in place by the frame, you can glue it to a larger piece of paper first.)
